Can the new single keep up with the Wunderhorses’ critically acclaimed last album? How dark is it? May it be signalling a future change? 

I’ve been keeping Midas, Wunderhorse’s 2024 album, in my playlist ever since its release, so a new single released just a few days ago most certainly sparked my interest. Is it just a bridge between the last and a new album? Or is there more to it?

Now more than ever, we’re seeing many bands releasing a single or EP between albums. It’s a good strategy to keep their audience on their toes and engaged because the current music landscape offers more than a living soul can consume.

Let’s have a closer look at ‘The Rope’.

The guitar sound dominates the song, allowing the rest to be heard only during the vocal, non-chorus parts, which gives the lyrics more urgency and persistence. In some ways, the sound appears simple; it has no hidden complexities. It

While surprisingly minimalistic and clear, the lyrics are powerful. It feels like it stems from the same collection of cells as ‘Midas’, the opening song from the previous album. However, contrary to the opener, it’s brighter, or hopeful, as the repetition of ‘don’t let go’ suggests/ The theme of detachment plays a central role but the lifeline, the rope, can help. As in, ‘hold on, things may get better’.

Should I summarise my thoughts, the conclusion would be that ‘The Rope’ is a good song, you’ll enjoy listening to it when it comes up in your playlist, but it’s not a classic. At least not an instant one.

That being said, the song will live in your head rent-free for a few days or weeks.

The brightening implied in the song may signal a potential change and a slightly more positive coming album.

Wunderhorse, The Rope, & Song Meaning

While minimalistic, there are a few key themes: inner struggle, disconnection, but also hope.

‘With the pinhole eyes / And the darkness within’ and ‘I’m sick of kicking out my life / In the glare of a world / That just don’t wanna know’ suggest isolation or disconnection from the world.

‘But he looked me in the eye / And I stared right down that barrel’ pictures someone confronting or realising the mess, the circumstances of the current state of both life and mind. It could also be an allusion to Kurt Cobain and suicidal thoughts.

The awareness of the situation makes the individual realise that there’s a lifeline, the rope, that may help set the stage for changes, improvements, and fixes.
