Blue and green record exploding into shards

Cober
Eulogy LP

As a part of the big clear-out, we came across this enigmatic album from Cober, called Eulogy. Having already released two full-band records, Sheila Bommakanti has ditched all unnecessary sound on this record, opting instead for the haunting sounds of electric guitar and semi-whispered vocal.

With the guitar plucking out the counter-melodies, the vocal combines Hole, Drugstore and Veruca Salt. Despite the entirely spartan approach to this record, the Seattle origins are unmistakable and Cober have a sombre-grunge sound you won’t have heard before.

The variation is a strong point on this record; from the spacey intro to ‘Words’ to the plucked verse of ‘Handprints’ or the tuneful strumming of ‘Unbroken’. That can’t be an easy job either, given the self-imposed limitations of the line up.

This is a pale-beautiful record that catches a mood and eloquently bares the soul.
