Dweeb
Interview

When and where did dweeb come from?

We got together in October 2002 after meeting at Nexus, which is a Christian music college in Coventry. At first it was just a bit of fun on the side of doing the course there, but we started to do it seriously and really got going September 2003.

How did you land the record deal?

We played a couple of times at a festival in Yeovil called Nth Fest, which the guys who run Risen Records have a hand in organising. After seeing us play there and go down really well, the A and R guy from Risen came up to our practice and offered us a deal there and then! It was the fourth label to offer us a deal but the first we accepted, the others just weren’t right for us. But the guys at Risen are awesome and have been great to us so far.

When you were asked to do ‘Singing with the Enemy’, did you have any reservations?

Oh yeah, loads! There were a lot of risks, and a lot of things that could’ve gone wrong – all of which we spent a lot of time chatting through with the series producers. But you see, for us as four Christian lads, we hate the way that the Christian faith is portrayed in the media. You seem to either see something that’s a major cheese-fest, full of nut-jobs or a dried up dead religion – but that’s all crap! We’ve found something in God that has totally changed our lives, something that we’re excited about and something that is so totally relevant to where we’re at today. This has been the reality of the Christian faith for us, and, despite all the risks, we didn’t want to pass on the opportunity to show that. So hopefully that has come across in the final cut of the show.

The producers of the show obviously wanted sparks to fly by putting these two bands together – did they get what they wanted?

No, not at all!! We were obviously very different to them, and although we had great discussions and debates, we never had an argument – not once! There were no raised voices between the bands at any time, we got on great!

Are you worried about being branded the big-brother contestant of the band world?

Well, there’s that risk I guess. But the show’s not a massive or manufactured thing like say X-Factor. We’ve been around long before going on the program and have a solid fan base to whom we’ll never be ‘that band from the TV show.’ And I’m fairly confident that those who are introduced to [dweeb] through the show will see that there’s more to us than one TV appearance!

What’s next for [dweeb]?

Well we’re currently in the process of recording our album ‘It Came From Outer Space’ – our first release on Risen Records, which is due for release in November this year. It’s sounding sweet so far and is certainly a big step up on the stuff we have available at the moment. We hope to get a couple of tracks up on www.dweebmusic.co.uk and www.myspace.com/dweebmusic

around the time of release – you’ll also be able to pick up a copy from those sites once it’s all done. After that we’re doing an album tour from February – April ’08 with an awesome band called Electralyte. Again dates will be added to our website and Myspace over the coming months, so check ’em out if you’re interested in catching a us live along the way.
