Well this is all very exciting. The song is called ‘Bittersweet’, the vibe, too, is bittersweet, and overall this song pokes bony fingers into all the ribs of musical delight. Cliffords might be my new favourite band.

It burst forth with a great guitar hook and intense string songs over a big beat. Then it disintegrates into a verse with the drums bubbling along, the bass punching little moments, and the guitar haunting the edges. The vocal is melodic and warm in tone and floats among the instruments confidently. The sliders start pushing up in the pre-chorus and for the big moment all those introductory elements return to lift the song.

And underneath the hood, the lyrics bring a folksy poetry. By the time that black dog outro hits, the song has been added to playlists and put in permanent rotation. The intensity of that build in the final third is a big bonus, but I was already devoted when that hit.

Listen for yourself and tell me I’m wrong!

Bittersweet Lyrics

The city begged look up
I swear Harry Clarkes been kissing sinners
Spoon fed stained glass love
You never lost me but you sure don’t back the winner

All your hopeless lovers come and bow down at my door
They seek some sweet redemption but I cry out for more

Don’t call it bittersweet
Blame it on my milk stained teeth
Sure, I was just a girl
And you can beg and lie and cheat
Crawl on your knees your my whole world

All the lovers come for trouble
And bow down at my door
They seek some sweet redemption
I cry out for more

Don’t call it bittersweet
Blame it on my milk stained teeth
Sure, I was just a girl
You can beg and lie and cheat
Crawl on your knees your my whole world

Don’t call it bittersweet
Blame it on my milk stained teeth
Sure, I was just a girl
You can beg and lie and cheat
Crawl on your knees your my whole world

There’s a black dog running down
Around your merchants quay
He holds back no punches
Calls himself salt of the lee
