EDGING

Jump to...

Arriving suddenly and immediately answering the question of who is wielding guitar, blink-182 have opted for bouncing classic punk revival for their brand new single, ‘EDGING’. So, with Tom DeLonge rejoining Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker, what direction will the music take?

Well, ‘EDGING’ draws on both the 70s and 90s punk scenes with a track that harks back to their earlier work. The big difference is we’re a few years later on, and it’s neither the same men nor the same river. Lyrical duties are swapped, and there’s a certain amount of subversion in the choice of both activity and location in the biographical-style lyrics (our lawyers made us add “style” to the word “biographical” as while we’re pretty sure they did it, we don’t know if they actually did it in church).

The song has a fun element, for sure, but it’s not debased by humour. It’s got the bones of a defiant punk love song, something The Buzzcocks might have penned. After a couple of spins, the mouth-foaming unabating need to see the band live is bubbling up, though their UK tickets are flying out like the letter scene from Harry Potter.

There’s also a new album to start thinking about, though there’s no title or release date available yet. If you weren’t salivating before, Pavlov’s bell is resounding now, echoing along the hallways and hinting that dinner may be ready.

If you’re going to announce yourselves, this is how you do it.

Tom DeLonge’s Open Letter to Matt Skiba

Posted on social with a short introduction, Tom DeLonge’s open letter to Matt Skiba thanked him for keeping blink-182 alive. “I sent this to Matt personally,” DeLonge explained. “But it’s important for the world to know that I honor him. Thank you, Matt Skiba.” The full letter is below.

Hi Matt, Tom DeLonge here,

I wanted to take a minute and say thank you for all that you have done to keep the band thriving in my absence. I think you are enormously talented (I still love and listen to your band to this day).

You have always been so kind to me, not only in the press, but also to others. I really noticed. Emotions between the three of us in blink have always been complicated, but Mark’s cancer really put things in perspective. But to be honest, the band would not even be here today if it were not for your ability to jump in and save the day.

From my heart to yours, thank you for being a member of our band.

Signed with a rock-hand emoji.

EDGING Lyrics

I ain’t that cool, a little fucked in the head
They’ll be hangin’ me quick when I’m back from the dead
Get the rope, get the rope
Get the rope, get the rope

I’m a punk rock kid, I came from hell with a curse
She tried to pray it away, so I fucked her in church
Don’t you know? Don’t you know?
Don’t you know? Yeah, don’t you know?

They say: “You’re not safe here if I
Stay with a knife that sharp”

No way, no, I leave them broken-hearted
Oh no, look at thе mess we started
Oh no, I lеave the broken hearts this way
Whatcha say? Wanna play?

Yea, don’t be fooled, I’m only letting you down
They pursue me on foot, but I hid in the crowd
Like a ghost, like a ghost
Like a ghost, like a ghost

The seats of my car are filled with cigarette burns
I got a fire in my eye, a little blood on my shirt
Let’s hit the road, hit the road
Hit the road, hit the road

I know there’s a special place in hell
That my friends and I know well
There’s a perfect place to go
When it’s time to lose control

No, I leave them broken-hearted
Oh no, look at the mess we started
Oh no, I leave the broken hearts this way
Whatcha say? Wanna play?

Nightmare, daydream
You can’t save me

No way, no, I leave them broken-hearted
Oh no, look at the mess we started
Oh no, I leave the broken hearts this way

Oh no, I leave the broken hearted
Oh no, look at the mess we started
Oh no, I leave the broken hearts this way
Whatcha say? Everyday. It’s a waste. Wanna play?
