It all begins with a choral bass line resplendent in trebly punch. Yes, ‘One Day You’ll Hurt As Much As Me’ is wasting no time in establishing it’s Goth identity. Then the drum beat arrives to push the song along with the hi-hat accents and simple kick, and the first notes from the haunting guitar.

Once the plaintive vocal echoes across the top, the atmosphere is complete, with lyrics of longing and passive revenge. The chorus uses the title as the plot twist, initially wishing for the betrayal and pain to be recognised before switching to the darker desire that accompanies all that hurt.

If you want atmospheric post-punk, Deceits certainly deliver it with sincerity. There’s a consistency to their style across the sounds, words, videos, and artwork that creates a delightful edginess. It’s not drab and self-absorbed, it has sharp teeth and doesn’t hesitate to gnash.
