Stand Atlantic have been sparse on the release front since Was Here , but ‘Velcro’ more than makes up for that with it’s emotional tone and playful lyrics. Yes, quality beats volume when it comes to ouput and this is quality.
The first verse nudges the edges of power pop with it’s melodic hooks, with an emotive pre-chours that bursts into the lyrical fun of the chorus. The metaphors are stacked here, the use of velcro to being closely coupled, the racing hearts being a techno beat, and I guess we’ll etcetera the rest. This is a love song, for sure, but not a sickly one. It coveys the uncontainable size of the feeling.
There’s also a feeling I get from this song, which is that Stand Atlantic have reconciled their history into this track. It feels less like they are trying to break free of their older sounds, so there are flickers of the Skinny Dipping and Pink Elephant eras in here. A little like when Therapy? finally felt ready to respond to ‘Screamager’ with ‘Still Hurts’.
