Emotionally Unavailable

Jump to...

Of all the singles Suede has released in recent years, this is the one that sounds most like their self-titled debut album. It has the swirling rush, urgent pace, and pure vibrancy. From the alarm-call guitars in the into and all the way through, this track evokes that classic sound.

Lyrically, the song captures a world-weariness. Initially the anonymous she is described as having ‘reached a point in her life when she can only imagine the worst’, but once we have grasped exactly how she feels, the plot twist comes in the final chorus where we stare into the mirror and admit that we’re emotionally unavailable. Mic drop (preceded by much swinging of the mic).

It seems to me that contemporary life has a kind of powder-keg feel. A taut atmosphere, like there’s something explosive about to happen, a latent anger, a lurking darkness, a frustration that requires suppression. We are all striving for connection in a disconnected world.

‘Emotionally Unavailable’ is part of an expanded edition of Autofiction, which has the original album, several bonus tracks, and a whole string of demo versions of the album tracks.

Emotionally Unavailable Lyrics

Whenever she laughs at herself, it will please you
Whenever she stares with those servant’s eyes
Whatever she says she wants, well, it clearly isn’t true
But you love to catastrophise

Oh-oh, she’s emotionally unavailable
Oh-oh-oh, but with the bluest eyes
Oh-oh-oh, emotionally unavailable
Oh-oh-oh, she’s paralysed

And the paint wasn’t even dry
And the air-conditioning never seemed to be off
Has she reached that point in her life
When she can only imagine the worst
And the future is better unknown?
And if she reached out, she’d only get hurt
Every night gives her something to hate
But I’d rather be hated than alone

Oh-oh, she’s emotionally unavailable
Oh-oh-oh, but with the bluest eyes
Oh-oh-oh, emotionally unavailable
Oh-oh-oh, she’s paralysed

Oh-oh, we’re emotionally unavailable
Our reputation centres on a pack of lies
Oh-oh-oh, emotionally unavailable
Oh-oh-oh, paralysed
