It’s an atmospheric start for Cartographer’s ‘Sanctuary’. Piano notes cut through a wash of synth and then the song kicks in. The powerful precision of their alt-metal chorus punches through.

The heavier side of the band is reserved for the big chorus, leaving space for other elements to shine through elsewhere. The verse has an ambient edge, with lots of space for the melody to cut through and the pre-chorus has a stabby rhythmic element.

The instruments achieve great tone on this record and there’s plenty of skill on display. Most importantly, the song has melodic hooks and a good connection to the lyrical themes. Skies Marie’s vocal dances between sweet clarity to a powerful fry-edged rock style.

I love a metal song when it has great contrast, lots of melody, and waves of instrumentation that pull your attention around every instrument at different times – and Cartographer do exactly this. When you happen to be super-talented, it’s easy to descend into the chaos of demonstration music, but the song doesn’t compromise at all with this band.

Sanctuary Lyrics

In a collapse, I’m crawling
Our greatest sin is falling
You were my sanctuary
Pleading peace, imparting wars
In between
And with a rush, I’m falling harder
It’s gazing in on me
Through the eye, enable the break

The fear has decayed
I’m having trouble placing my name
Peering through the window
Hoping to break the rain
Glass cracked
Paint faded
Halcyon vanishing
Everything is changing

Falling into oblivion
If I could only find myself
Taking shelter
In a calm before the storm

In a collapse, I’m crawling
Our greatest sin is falling
You were my sanctuary
Pleading peace, imparting wars
In between
And with a rush, I’m falling harder
It’s gazing in on me
Through the eye, enable the break

Blinding flashing before my eyes
You’re to blink or I’ll lose your line
Deafening thunder comes crashing
As I lose my mind
Blindly stumbling in the dark
Mind slipping endlessly

Falling into oblivion
If I could only find myself
Taking shelter…

In a collapse, I’m crawling
Our greatest sin is falling
You were my sanctuary
Pleading peace, imparting wars
In between
And with a rush, I’m falling harder
It’s gazing in on me
Through the eye, enable the break
