Descartes A Kant - After Destruction

After Destruction LP

Descartes A Kant have dropped their album, After Destruction. This is one of those rare examples where the concept encourages you to listen to the songs as a whole. The placement is important as the album has been thought through.

After ‘Hello User’ sets the scene, ‘Graceless’ is the first song. It has a restrained pace, but plenty of quirky elements that create a space opera soundtrack with elements of classic epic cinema and modern synth blended into the four-piece band lineup.

The album builds on this interchange of computer monologues and musical experimentation, often blending the two as in the spoken word over wiry music of ‘Self-F’. The genre-hopping happens mid-song in many cases, as the writing deploys different sounds and techniques to keep the impact high.

There are Ramonesy elements with tom-tom rolls and fuzzy guitars, smart staccato rhythmic elements that remind me of Elastica, and even classic orchestral pop references.

‘Raindrops of Poison’ is the single that accompanies the album release, following ‘A Catastrophe’ and ‘After Destruction’. The placement of the singles at tracks 7, 8, and 11 are testament to the unusual approach. There’s no doubt this band want to push past the boundaries of what’s expected from more traditional rock.

The album format enhances the songs. ‘A Catastrophe’ makes a lot more sense when you hear it here than in isolation. The conceptual pieces are smart and funny, social commentary cleverly delivered, and when ’47 Dogs’ arrives it all starts clicking into place.

Yes, ‘Graceless’, ‘Raindrops of Poison’, ‘Woman Sobbing’, and ‘After Destruction’ are great songs, but they are at home here, nestled into their creative home. You’ll not hear many albums that are off-the-wall like this and as brilliant as this at the same time.

Raindrops of Poison Lyrics

When she will get it together
Will he come back just to haunt us?

I’ll meet you at midnight to take her
I’ll meet you at midnight to save her
Will he come back just to haunt us?

Help me I want to surrender
Help me I want to protect her
Will he come back just to hunt us?

Youth like time in a sand clock
Lillies drying around us

I’ll try to be a good girl
I’ll try to be the best I can
I’ll try to be a strong girl
I’ll try to be the best I can

Seasons, seasons of boy love
Candy and raindrops of poison

I feel really really bad
I’ve been praying for the help of god
I’m really really sad
I’ve been praying for the help of god

I’ve felt lonely for the last days Mother
Things have been not good at all
I’ve felt lonely for the last years Mother
And I wish I could jump to your arms
And I wish I could jump to your arms
