Northern Gloom

In their latest single, ‘Safe’, Northern Gloom have done a great job of creating a sound that feel spacious but is resplendent in detail. What makes this even more epic is that the detail moves around the room as it transfers from piano to bass, to guitar. It even manifests in ambient sounds, whose origins I would have to guess, that slowly swim from left to right and back again.
It’s the piano that adds the darkest edge to the track; long bass chords and a pedalled d-sharp that sets the tone. The beat smartly hits syncopated accents with flurries of a straightened out beat when it needs drive, while the bass alternately pumps and runs. The guitar morphs many times in this song, from long dramatic sweeps to chugged chords and then taking the lead for a time The lyrics slot right in with the composition and they are delivered in a way that makes them an additional instrument in the track.
Northern Gloom are fascinating. Their ability to whip up a whole-body experience through music is unparalleled. On top of the song itself, their hostage-themed music video brings it all to life with the smart touch of providing us the lyrics as part of the story.
This band is a great undiscovered talent.

Safe Lyrics
A veil is falling bare
Your eyes, they open wide
Now you can see everythingYou are not safe
Surprise!
You are not safe at allSurprise, hateful lies
And smiles, dirty smiles
