Band of Horses
The Funeral

Jump to...

Cult favourites on the burgeoning Canadian indie scene, Band of Horses finally get an outlet in the UK through one of the finer new indie labels operating at the moment – KIDS (Also home to the likes of the Wombats and Paul Hartnoll).

This stately shimmering indie runs at you from the same part of leftfield as The Shins or a slightly more upbeat Modest Mouse – ringing guitar arpeggios swaying along the melody to the inevitable uplifting chorus. Because, for as much as I love this breed of homespun, down-at-heel Americana, there is something kinda formulaic about a lot of bands riding the coattails of ‘wincing the night away’…

B-side ‘Its Not the End’ continues in very much the same vein as its a-side with a bit more of a kick in the tail perhaps, but ultimately destined to do little more than soundtrack the angst of being a suburban middle-class white teenager somewhere in middle America.

Having been acquainted with the Band of Horses back catalogue for some time now, it’s great to see them finally getting some of the recognition they so richly deserve – it would just have been nice for that to have come along before they appeared to the rest of the world, to be little more than scene chasers.

The Funeral Lyrics

I’m coming up only to hold you under
And coming up only to show you’re wrong
And to know you is hard, we wonder
To know you all wrong, we were

Ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh

Really too late to call, so we wait for
Morning to wake you is all we got
But to know me as hardly golden
Is to know me all wrong, they were

At every occasion, I’ll be ready for the funeral
At every occasion once more, it’s called the funeral
At every occasion, oh, I’m ready for the funeral
At every occasion of one billion day funeral

I’m coming up only to you show you down for
And coming up only to you show you’re wrong
To the outside, the dead leaves lay on the lawn
‘Fore they died, and had trees to hang there upon

Ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh

At every occasion, I’ll be ready for the funeral
At every occasion once more, it’s called the funeral
At every occasion, oh, I’m ready for the funeral
At every occasion of one billion day funeral
