InMe
Interview With Simon Taylor
After hearing so much good press about InMe’s eagerly anticipated album, I couldn’t resist the chance to find out more from InMe’s Simon Taylor. I caught up with the eccentric drummer at the Luton Student Union to talk about poker, splitting from their old management, guitar hero 2 and find out how the new album, Daydream Anonymous, came to be.
How does it feel to be rocking out on the music scene again?
It’s been almost a year since our last tour and we’ve just been bombing around at home, trying to get the album written. It’s just a case of being back out on the road again. It’s only now that we get to show the fans what we’ve done over the last year. It’s also nice to tour with half a set of new stuff, like as you’ve seen tonight we’ve dropped a few of the old songs that we’re bored of, such as Firefly and Neptune, they’re never going to get played again. It’s just great to be back on the road.
Daydream Anonymous is a rather interesting title, you know what it’s all about but I don’t, how did it come about?
It’s about the editing of the breakdown of the last album and us splitting with our manager, we sort of felt that we came back completely out of the public eye and we grew a bit anonymous compared to the way that we were. We just spent a lot of time at home writing and playing computer games. I also did a bit of work as well. Just basically about us being detached as to what we were doing before. We seem to go full circle on every album as we worked it out, like we did really well with the first album and disappeared for two years, and with the second album that we did, it did pretty well and then we disappeared for another two years, it’ll probably happen again with this album.
Your fans must be really chuffed about the new album, what have their responses been so far?
Really good so far, really good. I wasn’t nervous though, but it’s always about what the fans are going to think of it. Kerrang! this week have given us single of the week, that’s a massive bonus. Fightstar reviewed it and gave us a seven out of ten, cheers guys! I think the new stuff is good in respect of the last album, whereas this album is alot more technical, even though Joe left the band as he’s a complete metaller. Well, we all are at heart really. It’s nice to hear what the fans think of it.
It’s nice to see that the InMe bond is still going strong, what elements and features were you looking to add to the new album?
Heavyness! As well as saying, we sort of chilled out on the second album, this album came out a bit more cocky and we really wanted to go for it. We went a bit more technical with the guitars and Dave loves to play Guitar Hero and he’s pretty fucking good at it and Greg’s a bit of a master shredder at bass now, he’s only been playing the bass for a year and he’s better than most of the bass player’s out there already. We thought we’d go all out for this album, it is how I’d imagined it to be, very technical.
I’ve been to your shows before, there’s so much energy, what can the fans expect from tonight’s show?
Exactly that. We make sure we put 110% into everything every night. We just go crazy and we love feeding off of each other and the audience as well. With this venue, you’re just so close to the fans and with this venue you can see the whites of their eyes, the more mental you go, the more mental the fans go.
What exciting things happen on tour?
They’re all kind of blurred into one. Last night we played poker and Greg beat us at it, he’s really good. It’s like a win lose situation as he doesn’t like taking our money, I haven’t actually won a game of poker yet, but I’m sure I’ll win at some point. I’m leading them into a false sense of security, I’m going to let them believe that I’m really shit at it, then win and take all their money.
Have you toured with tonight’s support bands Serpico and Days In December before?
We haven’t actually. There’s been a couple that we have before like the smaller bands that we know like in Colchester that we take along with us, which are our friends from home. We just met the Serpico boys yesterday, for the first four or five days they were on their own and now it’s like sharing a bus with six more people on it, we get on really well with them on tour, we’re moulding them into what we think a touring band should be like, it’s our mission! It’s nice to have a new band on tour that we don’t know, we always make friends with our support bands which is always nice to meet up and get pissed with. It’s cool to have a fresh band that no one really knows and you can take them under your wing as it were. Showing them around and looking after them.
What does the future hold in store for InMe?
Well with the new management and the new label, hopefully quite a lot. We just signed a new deal out in Japan, so we’ll be doing some shows out there. We’ve got to try and do Europe which we haven’t done yet; I don’t know why. With the new management, he’s really up for us going round Europe which could be fun. Then there’s the States, where we’ve got to make a good impression, the yanks are quite judgmental, with us being a British band, you’ve got to be something really good. I’d really love to tour Australia and go and sit on the beach.
I hope we get some really big support bands next year, I can’t say who as I don’t know yet but we are approaching a few bands, but it’s a case of just wait and see. The album’s out next month, so it all depends on that. It’d literally the best thing we’ve ever written and with that it’s pretty good compared to the other ones. We had so much fun recording it and with all the freedom and the producer who’s a metal head, he’s really easy to work with. With the second album we were out in Los Angeles for two month’s so you couldn’t have more distractions if you wanted. With this album we were literally stuck in a box room with five weeks to make an album in the middle of nowhere.
