The Bad Robots
EP
This is the first demo from The Bad Robots who hail from London and liken themselves to The Beatles and The Clash.
It’s fair to say there are a few stand-out tracks on this cheerful mix of ska-tinged rock and roll, such as the Green Day-esque ‘Five Minutes Before’ and the energetic ‘Day By Day’. The latter has our wondrous capital city as its central theme and conjures up comparisons with The Ordinary Boys and some of the more upbeat Cure songs. Overall though, the standout track for me is ‘Come Undone’, which illustrates the band’s above average lyrical abilities.
The Bad Robots’ main vocals on this demo are pleasingly clear but not amazingly strong or varied. The backing vocals, although good, are not particularly easy to make out; sounding very distant.
Despite this, the band seem to play well together and I’ve no doubt they get people bopping on the dance floor, particularly with songs such as ‘Another Disguise’, which has a strong bass and some fascinatingly mental shouty bits. However, there is little that’s outstanding or truly memorable on this demo and I’d have to see them live to decide if there’s much in the way of raw appeal beyond the basic formula.
