Neil McSweeney
Postcards
A sepia sonic landscape of buzzing acoustic guitars and a powerful vocal pave the way for ‘Postcards’, Neil McSweeney’s debut single.
It’s got strong flashes of Nick Cave and has plenty of borrowings from the other side of the pond, even more so in b-side, ‘My Design’.
‘Postcards’ is a rather accomplished single, starting off muted and stripped but reaching crackling highs for a surprisingly up beat chorus. The shimmering heat of the single is extinguished all too soon by its sucessor, which lacks the graceful beauty and carefully composed instrumentation.
This is a slice of folk-acoustic-alternative genius, followed by something of an acoustic-Americana afterthought.
