Daisy Brain - Small Matters

Small Matters

Bringing back the grunge, but with added Britpop and power-emo, Daisy Brain are able to arrest your attention fast. This is exactly what they do with their single, ‘Small Matters’. A bit of feedback, a punchy intro with a modulating guitar motif, and then down to the sultry business of the verse.

Having brought things down to a smoulder, Daisy Brain starts winding things up in preparation for the chorus, and it’s a double-barrelled twist, with the elongated “small matters” melody followed by the cry at the start of the next line, which is “I”, but is almost an “aaaaarghhhh”.

The song treads this line throughout, it’s got an impressive thickness alongside hooks that they don’t dwell on. It makes the song super-enjoyable (and not just the first few times).

As for style, we’re ready for it…

Look, it’s about time we had a grunge revival!

If you imagine Nirvana with a strong flood of All-American Rejects and just a twist of someone like The Longpigs… this is where it lands in my head. That heady denseness manifested through a great song. It’s really good stuff.

Small Matters – Lyrics

Hey, that’s not a nice thing to say
It’s been stuck on my mind all day
Go find a way to get over it
Or you’ll die on your phone kid

I know it’s tragic
I’m acting so erratic
I know I come off badly
But your girlfriend’s so dramatic

Imagine being someone
That’s never had to panic
You’re too comfortable
Man you’re way too comfortable

What calms you down?
How do you let go of the small matters
I have an urge to shout
But I know I’ll regret it after

It’s not that bad is it though
You spend too much of your time on your own
And you’ve got nothing to show for it
You’ll die on your phone kid

What calms you down?
How do you let go of the small matters
I have an urge to shout
But I know I’ll regret it after

I’m always overthinking,
I’m always quick to jump ship
Sat at my desk with no words to spare
I’m always sober
And numb and frail like it makes a difference

Like it makes a difference
Like it makes a difference
Like it makes a difference
Like it makes a difference

What calms you down?
How do you let go of the small matters
I have an urge to shout
But I know I’ll regret it after

I’m always overthinking,
I’m always quick to jump ship
Sat at my desk with no words to spare
I’m always sober,
And numb and frail like it makes a difference
