There’s so much to love about Candi Carpenter’s new single, from those very first warm notes right through to the very end. This is a sparkling indie-pop gem with a bleeding heart of old storytelling.

In terms of structure and technical instrumentation… yeah I usually talk about all that stuff, and it’s here. The musicianship is superb throughout and the trickle of guitars into the song via muted picking in the pre-chorus builds the epic feels of the song. It really is wonderfully done. The result is a modern pop song with some eighties flourishes.

Let’s tick that box and get into the lyrics. Like ‘Exorcist’, the song is at least semi-autobiographical with a similar candid vulnerability. Candi Carpenter has a great voice, smoothly bursting into life for the big chorus. There’s a hint of the country background in the delivery, which adds to the emotional style of this song.

The song itself is about the experience of love for someone who’s been buried in vampire novels. This genre-lyricism is flooded with miniature detail about snapshots of the relationship and all the confused emotion that surrounded it. It’s rendered in realistic detail and if you don’t feel it, you may be dead… in which case the song might be about you.

The video is a great accompaniment to the song, fully investing in the theme. You can watch it below.

Candi Carpenter has gone two-for-two in releasing really great songs with a horror theme and I’m not alone in hoping there’s a whole album in this vein (yeah, I did it).

Novels About Vampires Lyrics

You picked me up in your mums van
To see your heavy metal band
We said ‘I love you’ on the phone
When nobody else was home
Making out to Evanescence
You made me a dolphin necklace
I was saving myself for marriage
You were saving me from my parents

And I was always reading novels about vampires
I wanted a beautiful dead boy to show up at my door
I wanted you to drain the blood out of my body
And replace it with yours, yours, yours

Just like in a vampire novel
Just like in a vampire novel
Just like in a vampire novel
Ooh

Your skin was pale your eyes were red
You sold weed to the pot heads
You felt me up behind the dumpsters
I never got the sex talk from my mother
I was ashamed, and I was repressed
I closed my eyes when I got undressed
You respected my religion
I broke up with you because you weren’t a Christian

And I was always reading novels about vampires
I wanted a beautiful dead boy to show up at my door
I wanted you to drain the blood out of my body
And replace it with yours, yours, yours

Just like in a vampire novel
Just like in a vampire novel
Just like in a vampire novel
Ooh

I said make me immortal
Allergic to sunlight
I promise I’ll only eat the bad guys
I don’t want to see myself in the mirror any more

And I was always reading novels about vampires
I wanted a beautiful dead boy to fly up to my window
I wanted you to drain the blood out of my body
And replace it with yours, yours, yours

Just like in a vampire novel
Just like in a vampire novel
Just like in a vampire novel
Ooh
