Therapy?
Poundland of Hope and Glory

Jump to...

Hard Cold Fire is inbound, and ‘Poundland of Hope and Glory’ is our second slice, following the March release ‘Joy’.

This track has a lot to like, but once again, the sentiment drives things home. Therapy don’t write the kind of songs that emerge from the dark Satanic mills of the industrial music complex; they have actual thoughts! Today, it’s the likes of Blake and Benson in the firing line – or, more accurately, what their original work has been transformed into over the course of 200 years.

Despite all the pomp and circumstance, and no matter that ‘Jerusalem’ has become a go-to song for political parties hoping to stir the patriotic soup, it’s fair to say it has yet to be builded here.

In the band’s own words:

This track started out as a hard take on how people lose themselves in narratives to the point that the myth takes on greater importance than the fact. Just like the old adage about the liar repeating the lie so much that they eventually believe it themselves, the culture around us is bursting with fairy stories we tell ourselves.

Compared to the hypnotic ‘Joy’, this song has a rocking riff and smoking chug, while the chorus is big and open. The sound is fairly represented in a great unhinged video – we don’t get many videos from Therapy, but we’re two-for-two on the new album, and I love this one as much as the ‘Joy’ video. The band slams the song with great fast-forward sweeps and zooms while ballerina Hannah MacDonald dances, waves a flag, and gradually decays.

This dear reader, is called a metaphor.

The album is already shaping up to be an exciting one. Bring me the record of desire!

Poundland of Hope and Glory Lyrics

Your narrative is built on blood and death
And your legacy chokes on its last breath

It’s not Jerusalem
Jerusalem’s a city in the Middle East
Your Jerusalem
Is just another myth

You’re hanging on to your porcine crusade
To escape from the reality of drab decay

It’s not Jerusalem
Jerusalem’s a city in the Middle East
Your Jerusalem
Is just another myth

All your greatest myths
All your greatest hits
All your greatest myths

It’s not Jerusalem
Jerusalem’s a city in the Middle East
Your Jerusalem
Is just another myth

It’s not Jerusalem
Jerusalem’s a city in the Middle East
Your Jerusalem
Is just another myth

Just another myth
Just another myth
Just another myth
