HotWax - Invite Me Kindly

Well, this is a delight. The guitars get lifted with an ace drum fill and the song has already endeared itself to me. The vocals kick in next, a verse that has a melody that develops the song into a full band second verse.

There’s just a hint of keys, a couple of bars break, and then a delightfully detailed second verse. The bass steps up for the pre-chorus and then we’re into the thick of it for just a few moments. Wonderful stuff.

The third verse has me entirely devoted. What the heck is going on with the bass and guitars as the keys step it up a notch? Well, it’s complicated. Before you know it, the song ends with a coordinated flourish.

It’s amazing that the band have turned out ‘Drop’ and ‘Phone Machine’ as the teasers for EP, Invite Me Kindly. I thought I had them worked out with the first song, but now I’ve been sent back to the drawing board with my tail between my legs. ‘Drop’ was a great track, but this new single has a level of sophistication hidden in the fuzz that I just didn’t expect.

HotWax are a better band than I realized (and I already thought they were good!)

Phone Machine Lyrics

So just hide under the family tree
You can be my bride cover yourself in cream
She’s gonna turn away so throw her in the sea
And I’ll take your side when you got no phone machine

Shooting birds through a sewn red red memory
Fly towards being a documental freak
Squint her eyes to see she’s somebody like me
And I’ll take your side when you got no phone machine

Shoot your birds take your pain
Shoot your birds take your pain

So just hide under your family tree
You could be my bride cover yourself in cream
She’ll always turn away so ditch her in the sea
And i’ll take your side when you got no phone machine

Shoot your birds take your pain
Shoot your birds take your pain
