Hot Milk
Insubordinate Ingerland
Jump to...
First things first! This song is performed before a giant George Cross, contains the choral hook ‘I’m England ’til I die’, and a call to ‘come and have a go if you think you’re hard enough’. I suspect that many will miss the point entirely and we’ll be Springsteensplaining for decades to come.
So, I could talk about the rapid alt-rock musicality, the switches between vocals, the big chorus… but I think instead I’ll reinforce the punchy accusations that fill the song to the brim. It speaks of the betrayal of the working class, how we’ve been let down by successive governments, and how they manipulate the masses.
That’s not to say the song is without humour. One thing we’ve always done well in our battle with authority is bring cheeky ungovernable wit.
Cuppa tea, bourgeoisie, mushy pea. England.
The song might be accused of being downbeat, but I offer the suggestion that the situation is downbeat and the song is, in fact, defiant.

Insubordinate Ingerland Lyrics
Vape me a new revolution
In a cloud of flavoured smoke
Coz we’re occupied with ethanol
Gimme factory false hopeSo hang us out to dry
Coz the working class
Hero is just a lie
(Breathe in the desolation)Tell me are you thinking,
Or are you drinking?I’m England ‘til I die
Born and bred where the love is dead
It’s social suicide
So stop your dreamin’ and drink your pint
Long live the grey eclipse
Grave Britain has gone to bits
Complicitly comply
I don’t mind, I’m England ‘til I dieConstant conceited confusion,
I just don’t know where I stand
In Insubordinate Ingerland
See hypocrisy first handOh I’d kiss you to death
In the land of all the
Skint and unimpressed
(Breathe in the desolation)Are you even thinking?
What are you drinking?I’m England ‘til I die
Born and bred where the love is dead
It’s social suicide
So stop your dreamin’ and drink your pint.
Long live the grey eclipse
Grave Britain has gone to bits
Complicitly comply
I don’t mind, I’m England ‘til I dieListen right, it’s a social commentary calm down
But it’s kinda true,
You know I’m rightCome and have a go if you think you’re hard enough
Five bags deep just to show you’re proper tough
Lookin’ kinda bleak down the Salford corner shop
Cuppa tea, bourgeoisie, mushy peaEngland.
“God Save the King”
Douse me in Kerosene
“God Save the King”
Douse me in KeroseneI’m England ‘til I die
Born and bred where the love is dead
It’s social suicide
I don’t mind
I’m England ‘til I die
