Lo*Chine
That Joke Ain’t Funky No More EP

Well over a year since ‘Infectalistic Fantasmafunk’, Lo*Chine are back with a new 4 track EP that funks all the way from start to finish. The top notch vocal combined with musicians that do exactly the right thing at the right time contribute heavily towards the overall slick sound of the recording.

First track, ‘Between Dreams’, has crystalline guitar sounds and a raspy bass run that stutter their way into a flowing funkette with a soulful vocal.

The fashionable branded sound of ‘FNUK’ is next up with a laid back pace and yet another great bass line, this time with a fat sound that oozes beneath the chirpy guitars.

‘Squirm’ is my favourite of the tracks on offer, with added disco appeal and a really good chorus that covers a decent contrasting range.

Final track, ‘Sea Cow and Number Boy’, has a Ram Jam intro and vintage chorus. Although the meaning of the lyrics is somewhat lost on me, I’m sure that Lo*Chine aren’t drawing from a chance meeting between a herbivorous marine mammal and a mathematician.

These tracks aren’t as hooky as your typical pop or rock song would be, because they feature some more technical flourishes and tend not to return to a hook-line after every chorus. However, what this record does is inject your bloodstream with funky-twitch, forcing you to jerk your shoulders back and forth and move your head and feet!
