Blue and green record exploding into shards

This is Mewgatz
Underfelt LP

Albums should always leave you with something as they play out; be it emotion, inspiration… or occasionally disgust. Yet, Mewgatz seem to have put their middle fingers up to tradition with the Underfelt LP and gained nothing from it.

The fusion of guitars with the noise created from the circuitry of electronic devices creates what can only be described as video game sounds. Despite random moments of promise embedded in all the piercing electronica, by the end you’re left feeling deflated and wondering where the last half hour went. A record teetering on the edge of awkwardness it’s difficult to know quite how to feel.

The enthusiasm for electronica and balls to use it so continuously is admirable, but by ‘Speak and Spell’ the piercing sounds drown out any hint of a traditional instrument. Think nails on a chalk board. Any softening comes from the vocals, and parts of the album can be almost relaxing or soulful although for the most part it’s just that bit too technical.

Underfelt is certainly an experience and tracks like ‘Serca’ and ‘Aquarium’ achieve distinction and intensity but enthusiasm alone isn’t quite enough to carry this collection along.
