Machine Gun Kelly - Emo Girl

Machine Gun Kelly
Emo Girl (feat. Willow)

Pretty much everything is a collab right now, but hit your brain’s pause button and give the MGK and Willow collaboration a chance. ‘Emo Girl’ is the most Bowling For Soup track we’ve heard since, well, BFS themselves. Thematically it could even be the sequel to ‘Girl All the Bad Guys Want’.

If you might be forgiven for mistaking this musically for BFS, the vocals serve as a reminder that it’s not, with both singers recognisable for their signature sounds. Willow, in particular, gives a punchy performance with signature melodic shifts (have we finally found a replacement for the Millenium Wail?)

There is some subtle guitar work that makes the song rather appealing, too. In the verse, there is a bit of sparkly guitar work to add texture, and though the chorus is power-chord heavy there’s that Bowling For Soup style post-chorus hook to connect us back.

The song is a fun and catchy sure-fire winner, with the novelty aspect kept in check by buckets of talent.
