Bleach Lab return with a wonderful sombre dream-pop track with a neat narrative twist in the chorus.

The song pictures a post-breakup scene where our jilted man is attempting the Hollywood gesture of standing in the front garden, attempting to win back his love. In films, this public gesture is supposed to demonstrate that he’s willing to look foolish, eat humble-pie, and do better in the future. It’s a nod to Romeo and Juliet that demonstrates how misunderstood the “balcony scene” is in popular culture.

In the movie, she’d laugh, and he’d mount the trellis, climb to her window for a kiss, and cue credits. In this song, though, she doesn’t even recognise the song… ‘You play a song… you play a song that I don’t know’. Ouch.

This story is told through a song that has an atmospheric haze, the glass-like guitar dancing a melodic hook while the rhythm section brings a mood. The first verse is soft and muted, Jenna Kyle’s voice conjuring the words to life with a soft characterful topline.

The middle eight gets some extra strings, which leads to a rebuilding of the song’s elements, first the guitar line and then a particularly smart roll on the toms to bring in the bass.

Some bands are all about hooks and a huge chorus, Bleach Lab are an island of sophistication – offering complete moods.

‘Indigo’ has elements of Echo and the Bunnymen, with a great feathery vocal.

Indigo Lyrics

I picture you when you’re leaving
A memory for my safe keeping
There’s something to be said
About all that we went through

You add to my pain
With words I said, when breathing in your name
The worst thing that you could do
Was lead me back to you

Why throw stone in my glass home
With a message on a pebble, you let me know
You’re outside with a speaker on your phone
You play a song
Why throw stone in my glass home
With a message on a pebble, you let me know
You’re outside with a speaker on your phone
You play a song that I don’t know

The thing I hate about sleeping
Is finding out I’ve been dreaming
Cause when I closed my eyes
I was lying next to you

Now you wanna work it out
Wanna try, I don’t have time now
The best thing that I could do
Was to pull away from you

Why throw stone in my glass home
With a message on a pebble, you let me know
You’re outside with a speaker on your phone
You play a song
Why throw stone in my glass home
With a message on a pebble, you let me know
You’re outside with a speaker on your phone
You play a song that I don’t know

The sky turned indigo
I’ve gotta let you know
The sky turned indigo
I’ve gotta let you
Gotta let you go

Why throw stone in my glass home
With a message on a pebble, you let me know
You’re outside with a speaker on your phone
You play a song
Why throw stone in my glass home
With a message on a pebble, you let me know
You’re outside with a speaker on your phone
You play a song
You’re outside with a speaker on your phone
You play a song that I don’t know
