Smile For Me

With their album, Lost In A Rush of Emptiness, shaping up through a string of singles, ‘Smile For Me’ gives us a wonderous sultry peek at the latter half of the long-player.

Bleach Lab are one of the strongest feels on the music scene right now, but they bring the mood with many different manifestations. ‘Indigo’ gave us dream pop storytelling of the highest level, and ‘All Night’ supplied a haunting love song with a twist. Well, ‘Smile For Me’ fills your blood with emotive lyrics that are matched by a rich musical soundscape.

The lyrics paint a vivid picture, the verses rendering harassers in stark relief, while the chorus offers a powerful incantation to dispel the demon: ‘We don’t owe you anything’.

‘Smile For Me’ is a song dedicated to anyone who’s ever been made to feel uncomfortable or harassed in a public setting or otherwise. It’s calling out unacceptable behaviour and it’s an attempt to try and take some level of control of something we, as women, are often completely vulnerable to. It’s supposed to be empowering, a mantra of sorts.

‘Smile For Me’ is powerful and beautiful and, like all their singles so far, it just proves the album, Lost in a Rush of Emptiness, is going to be a stunning debut.

Smile For Me Lyrics

Who do they think they are?
They hide like shadows in the dark
Who do they think they are?
Your breath drips down my neck
It feels like red wine
Like red wine

Smile for me, won’t you smile for me?
It’s as if you think that I owe you anything
If I do as you please, will I realize what it means
Will I gain some clarity
Or will you just let me be?

There’s a knock at my door
It must be the devil calling
The devil calling
There’s a knock at my door
It must be the devil calling
Didn’t know you were calling

Smile for me, won’t you smile for me?
It’s as if you think that I owe you anything
If I do as you please, will I realize what it means
Will I gain some clarity
Or will you just let me be?

Keep your hands to yourself
I know it must be hard to think
We don’t owe you anything
Keep your hands to yourself
I know it must be hard to think
We don’t owe you anything

Keep your hands to yourself
I know it must be hard to think
We don’t owe you anything
Keep your hands to yourself
I know it must be hard to think
We don’t owe you anything
