Hot Milk - Bloodstream

It’s the third track on A Call To The Void, released on August 25th – so it’s likely to be a crucial single for the album. But ‘Bloodstream’ is getting played live as Hot Milk hit the summer festivals.

The song is a huge stomping anthem, harking back to some of the earlier work with its melodic pop-punk style. It all starts out with atmospheric keys, then Hannah calls out ‘living in my bloodstream’ and the beat kicks. The verse whomps and the pre-chorus adds guitar sparkle.

The chorus is cut back for the first outing, keys and then an almost marching-band drum beat. They are saving something for the next chorus and it’s a smart move.

The second verse has more guitar flickers, and you know it’s building up to a big chorus, which is true so there is no disappointment here. After the chorus, it’s a slamming instrumental and then a breakdown. All great prep and the final chorus feels suitably immense with its guitar solo/chorus reprise.

The song is pitched as an addiction-based metaphor for getting hooked on a relationship, with grainy attention to detail that almost makes it an addiction-based chronicle for getting hooked on, well, substances.

I love the sound of this single. It’s a perfect merge of their old and new sounds.

Living in my bloodstream

Where the hell did we die last night
Burning up in the new daylight
Back from the dark side again

Did the black hole spit us out
Bitter taste left in it’s mouth
If that’s not the last time then when?

‘Cause I tied a noose round everything
When I lace my drink I let it in
Turn my friends to enemies
Disassociate with me

One more night and I will let you go
Now you’re living in my bloodstream
Living in my bloodstream
Try to stop but I just can’t say no
‘Cause you’re living in my bloodstream
Living in my bloodstream

Living in my bloodstream

Seeing shapes that don’t exist
Kaleidoscope of the abyss
Soaked in our last night’s champagne

‘Cause when the come down comes around
My frontal lobe is checking out
Baptise me in acid rain

Now I’m looking for some peace of mind
As a piece of me was left behind
My phase goes into overdrive
Disassociate with me

One more night and I will let you go
Now you’re living in my bloodstream
Living in my bloodstream
Try to stop but I just can’t say no
‘Cause you’re living in my bloodstream
Living in my bloodstream

Living in my bloodstream

‘Cause I tied a noose round everything
When I lace my drink I let it in
Turn my friends to enemies
Disassociate with me

One more night and I will let you go
Now you’re living in my bloodstream
Living in my bloodstream
Try to stop but I just can’t say no
Now you’re living in my bloodstream
Living in my bloodstream

Now you’re living in my bloodstream
Living in my bloodstream
