The swirling gentle introduction with its crystal shard guitar notes and warm bass sets the stage for a song that shifts gears several times in what we can now describe as classic Cartographer style.

So, that first verse is like travelling in slow motion through space and then it bursts into a meteor-shower pre-chorus and slides into the chorus. We then get a couple of bars where the drums transport us to another verse. This time there’s more going on, a more angular style… and that’s how they do this thing where they never quite play the same thing as a song develops and morphs.

The lyrics are a metaphysical metaphor, nodding perhaps towards a journey of self-discovery and transformation. There’s more than a few nicely sculpted lines in here, such as ‘I was carved in broken words’ and ‘becoming the star that you’re wishing on’. It’s all delivered with high melody and it climbs the scales for the chorus.

Another flawless single from a band who make a complex sound seem so effortless.

Starlight Lyrics

From the starlight
I was carved in broken words
Beginning without fear
Expanding in the dark
I’ve never felt like myself
You’re calling back to me
Dissolving memory

Been lost but now you’re coming home, ready for another phase
Stuck between how it was before and how it’s gonna be

I’m not afraid of letting go
Turning the key into the unknown
Become the star that you’re wishing on
Blossoming into the sun

I let the void sing through Me
I’m on the edge of eternity
When darkness meets the light
We leave it all behind

Turning pages, ‘til they’re blank
Reading the space between the lines
Every scar was worth the pain
Pure and flawless, can’t decay
The end is truth, a new beginning
Holding hands with infinity

Been lost but now you’re coming home, ready for another phase
Stuck between how it was before and how it’s gonna be

I’m not afraid of letting go
Turning the key into the unknown
Become the star that (I’m) wishing on
Blossoming into the sun

I let the void sing through Me
We’re on the edge of eternity
When darkness meets the light
We leave it all behind

I am a passenger, this is not my shape
Reformed and still unbroken
Wander far beyond, through the light and space

Accepting change to ease the pain
I’m not afraid of letting go
Turning the key into the unknown
Become the star that (your) wishing on
Blossoming into the sun

I let the void sing through Me
We’re on the edge of eternity
When darkness meets the light
Let’s leave it all behind
