The Wombats
Let’s Dance to Joy Division
Scouse pop-trio The Wombats have had a busy year what with constant touring, debut US shows and moving to a new label (14th Floor – alongside newly crowned saviours of the UK mainstream, Biffy Clyro) the culmination of which is the release of their debut album, The Wombats Proudly Present… A Guide to Love, Loss and Desperation.
In anticipation of said new album, the band unveil new single ‘Let’s Dance To Joy Division’. An ode to student discos across the land, whereby our narrator can seemingly think of nothing better to do on his Friday evening than to go to one of the aforementioned discoteques and dance along to Ian Curtis’ doom mongers seemingly for no greater reason than its slightly ironic and seems like a pretty cool thing to do.
If all of this on paper sounds a little thin it’s because on record it is. Standard jerky punk hooks abound with not even much a chorus – the usual fuzzy magic deserting them seemingly – to try and rectify the situation. The frustrating this is that The Wombats are better than this, quite why the golden touch has deserted them here is anyone’s guess but rest assured we’ll be hoping for more of the magic that made the band so exciting in the flurry of early singles when the album drops next month.
If the tunes have been packed there should be nothing stopping the likely lads from becoming the most quirky and downright enjoyable new band in Britain.
