Some of the greatest songs come from our most terrible moments. With her new single, Cassyette documents her response to being told of the death of her father.

A suitable atmospheric introduction lands us amongst a growling industrial guitar. It’s stripped back for the verse to focus on the melody but builds back up so things can soar and swoop. These dynamics are explored throughout the song, resulting in an epic sound.

The lyrics artistically express the distress. In the press release, Brooking explained:

‘When She Told Me’ is about the moment my mum told me we lost my dad. It was the worst moment of my life. My vision literally flipped upside-down. I didn’t find out until recently that this is a stress response where your body is about to shut down. It felt unexplainable and this song is as close as I got. If you know this feeling this is for you.

The new album, This World Fucking Sucks, is out on August 23rd, 2024.

When She Told Me Lyrics

I went upside down
the birds flew away
And the oceans emptied out
And the skies turned grey

And the ground split open
I tumbled down
Into a cavern
I can’t cry
Anymore
And I can’t catch my breath
There’s no oxygen
Out here
I was altered when she told me
Never been good since she told me
The world stopped spinning round
I’m still spinning out
You talk but I hear no sound
My life is upside down
I

My eyes flip round
Now I’m upside down
the pressure mounts
Now I’m upside down

There’s a crow rap rapping at the door
And if he’s not looking for me, then he’s looking for you

I can’t cry
Anymore
And I can’t catch my breath
There’s no oxygen
Out here
I can’t cry
Cry

Altered when she told me
Never been good since she told me
We were altered when she told me
Never been good since she told me

My eyes flip round
Now I’m upside down
the pressure mounts
Now I’m upside down
