Fleeing New York - Up Up Up Up

Fleeing New York
Up Up Up Up / At Night

Following on from the rather successful ‘AOK’ album, Fleeing New York have returned with a double a-side in the form of ‘Up Up Up Up’ and ‘At Night’ – neither of which has graced the surface of a CD before this release.

The first a-side in this alphabetical bottle-neck, ‘Up Up Up Up’, starts the record with a quirky and catchy pop tune that could sit comfortably on just about any playlist despite it’s distinctly alternative flavour. The vocal ping-pong that was a highlight on their album plays an important role again in this track, as does their ability to construct decent instrumental sections and pump out a chorus that makes you want to grow your hair so you can mosh along.

‘At Night’ sees both vocals combining to take the lead for a bit, splitting later on to spice things up with some harmonies. The drums smack out a tight beat to accent the urgent guitars and the bass pounds along like a barefoot runner on grass. The chorus opens up like a flower with a spacious feel that is partly down to the half-paced drums and aided by the big guitar chords.

Fleeing New York have previously proved they can pump out some artistically brilliant songs with all kinds of quirks, twists and clever goings on, but this release proves their entirely more important ability to write songs that you really want to listen to again, again, again, again.

If this band can’t sneak their way on to a few festival billings, sell millions of albums and do something controversial on BBC1, then we all might as well give up now!
