Ash - Race the Night. An eighties style sunset scene in purple with a Delorean speeding along a road.

Ash
Like A God

Jump to...

Prepare yourselves for solid rock riffery and squeals as Ash bang out the retro-sounding ‘Like A God’.

This song is a reminder that Ash can dial it anywhere from emotional indie tracks to slamming rock numbers. They seem comfortable anywhere on that scale. If you peel away the lead guitar in this track you have a great example of modern riffery, with a distinct Ash melody in the chorus. It’s the licks that add that classic feel to the mix.

It opens with a solid beat, the guitar and bass pumping out the riff accompanied by some subtle ‘oohs’ with brief guitar licks. The lead guitar gains prominence gradually throughout the song, there are two verses with a chorus after each one. A big open-chord middle eight has some reciprocity compared to the previous Machiavellian god-ness, as you’re promised everything. A final whispered ‘like a god’ closes the song.

As for the theme, this song is either a very literal delusion of grandeur or a subtle love song with a sexy edge. Read too deeply into the lyrics here and it’ll make you blush (take a look at the second verse below and try on some interpretations to see how they fit).

Like A God Lyrics

I shock you into life, you tremble in my sight
You vow soon all this will be mine
The kingdom spread below, the landscape pure as snow
You offer yourself to me whole

You make me feel
Like a god
I feel like a god

You crown my intellect, you pray and genuflect
Where pain and pleasure intersect
You kneel with midnight eyes, a whiplash sacrifice
You give your body as the prize

You make me feel
Like a god
I feel like a god

No thought of consequence
In my realm, I’ll give you everything

No thought of consequence
In my realm, I’ll give you everything

The kingdom spread below
You’re under my control
The kingdom spread below
It feels so good to have control

You make me feel
Like a god
I feel like a god

Like a god
