Candi Carpenter - Seasonal Depression

Seasonal Depression

Jump to...

You can trust Candi Carpenter to bring a storytelling twist to the festive season, and ‘Seasonal Depression’ does exactly that. What is less expected is how deep it cuts.

The song is rendered with an acoustic focus, though there’s more instrumentation than you’ll notice at first – mainly because Carpenter’s voice is such a strong focus. What you will notice are the words. We’ve had some festive parodies in the past, but this is one-hundred-percent sincere, though it obviously touches on hidden parts of the season of forced joy.

You might listen to this and think: “Hey, this is a bit depressing for Christmas.” The point is… Christmas actually is a hard time for a lot of folks. The sheer volume of expectation and the immense waste that accompanies it is, well, awful and quite tasteless.

Maybe it’s what happens when you get older and the magic falls away. Perhaps the annual high street last chance to survive has stripped away the last mask of festivity with desperation. Whatever the reason, I feel this song wraps fingers around some deep feelings that I’ve failed to express for myself.

And this is what can make music so powerful. When someone writes a song that says something you couldn’t find a way to share.

Yes, if you’re someone who goes all-out for Christmas, you might even get offended by this song. For many of us, it’s an anchor for all these swirling conflicted emotions we get when there’s not enough sun and everyone wants our last dollar.

Thanks Candi.

Seasonal Depression Lyrics

It’s the nightmare before Christmas, it’s happening again
Here comes good old seasonal depression setting in
I used to love the fairy lights and tacky ass reindeer
Now all I see is plastic waste and manufactured cheer

Where does it go? All the time, and all the hope?
All the grass is dead and brown, but I don’t see any snow
There are Santas at the mall, and parties to attend
But it doesn’t feel like Christmas time again

I’m not feeling merry, I’m not feeling bright
My family isn’t talking, it’s another silent night
It’s too cold to shower and the sunset’s way too fast
I’m curled up in bed with all the ghosts of Christmas past

Where does it go? All the time, and all the hope?
All the grass is dead and brown, but I don’t see any snow
There are Santas at the mall, and parties to attend
But it doesn’t feel like Christmas time again

Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-laaaaaa
Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-laaaaa-aaaaaaa
Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-laaaaaa
Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-laaaaa-aaaaaaa

Where does it go? All the time, and all the hope?
All the grass is dead and brown, but I don’t see any snow
Another year is over – it’s almost at an end
But it doesn’t feel like Christmas time again

No, it doesn’t feel like Christmas time again

Fa-la-la-la-laaaaaa
