Pretty Good For a Bad Day

Jump to...

A muted guitar and synth intro opens up into a Billy Joel style verse delivery. Yes, we’re drawn in fast to Lauran Hibberd’s new single, ‘Pretty Good For a Bad Day’ and we haven’t got to the collaboration yet.

The chorus is a great pop wave, silky and warm and laced with upbeat downbeatness, which is kinda the theme of this song. The song is all about making the most of those days when everything is going wrong. Bask in the disaster, you might say, before stubbing your toe and thinking things just got worse… but still pretty good for a bad day.

Alex Gaskarth takes on the second verse and supplies backing vocals throughout, with the All Time Low reference not being lost on me with this track. The pair wrote the song in October 2022 before Lauran went out on tour with ATL, and they decided to release it as a pre-solstice treat.

Lauran Hibberd is a songwriting machine, infusing stories into songs as easily as beer soaks into an insole. The back catalogue is quality and the shape of the new album is, so far, impeccable.

Pretty Good For a Bad Day Lyrics

Stepped in gum and thought of you
Stuck in grooves of running shoes
Dropped a bottle of perfume
Not a scent you can defuse
It’s not the worst day of my life
But it’s up there with Bowie dying
Looks like I was uninvited
All my friends were clearly lying

I’m not well dressed and it’s depressing
When you run into your ex
I’m not that pressed and that’s impressive
Are you invested?

It’s pretty good for a bad day
I’m right in all the wrong ways
I’m straight up but I’m sideways
It’s always the same
It’s pretty good for a bad day
I’m dizzy with a migraine
I’m too late for the last train
But hey
It’s pretty good for a bad day

Locked myself out of the house
Wearing something that I hate
It’s raining and my window’s down
Just like that, I’m running late
Crossed my heart and hope to live
Surely something’s gotta give
How much more can I resist
If nothing left inside me is?

I’ll spend the night and week obsessing
Over stupid little things
Oh, my shit luck is really testing me
Maybe it makes me interesting?

It’s pretty good for a bad day
I’m right in all the wrong ways
I’m straight up but I’m sideways
It’s always the same
It’s pretty good for a bad day
I’m dizzy with a migraine
I’m too late for the last train
But hey
It’s pretty good for a bad day

Pretty good, pretty, pretty good, yeah

So I guess I’ll call my mother
Tell her I’ve been feeling low
‘Cause everything just keeps on changing
And I’m stuck moving slow
And I keep watching all the trailers
But the movie never shows
I think I wanna go back home
But then I say

It’s pretty good for a bad day
I’m right in all the wrong ways
I’m straight up but I’m sideways
It’s always the same
It’s pretty good for a bad day
I’m dizzy with a migraine
I’m too late for the last train
But hey
It’s pretty good for a bad day

Pretty good, pretty, pretty good, yeah

Pretty good, it’s pretty good for a bad day
