The new single from Cartographer is going straight on repeat, a djent track with Paramore leanings and a vocal that delivers melody and angsty fry. What’s not to love?

The song hits with an atmospheric synth intro that bursts into a full-band rendition of the same motif. Things make space in the verse for the vocal, though the instruments take turns in leading as we get to the angular pre-chorus. Then the motif returns for the chorus, which is short and punchy.

It’s always impressive when a song sounds so good, but when you listen closely you find it’s like a study on a theme. The parts get rendered and re-rendered in so many different ways, keeping things alive without detracting from the song’s cohesion.

The chorus is a perfect example of this, it begins life as a three-liner but follows up as a six-liner with subtly different lyrics each time. It’s not a jarring difference and you don’t immediately notice, but this is what happens with everything in the song – it twists and changes to ensure nothing is truly repeated.

I can’t wait to hear more from this amazing band.

Rewind Lyrics

Lean in we used to be our bedside
Thinking about all of the skeletons that you hide
You’re playing games and everybody knows it
Put on a mask of wise but you’re just a phoney
Woah, that’s just how you roll
Take a face but you can’t fake your soul
I hear the devil speaking tongues he’s on your shoulder
Telling you to feed the flame but we keep getting colder

Let’s not make this any harder than it has to be
Trying to fit until you keep pretending
You’re hands and heart find out eventually
Till I come off your head cause baby you’re no king
You got no queen

What a waste, what a waste of time
Wish I could hit rewind
Wide awake during this nightmare

Create the rules that you break yourself
Dragging me in and out of hell
Couldn’t stay any longer
This isn’t how it was meant to be
You said that you’d protect me
Do you believe you’re own story
Living in a lie is getting boring

Let’s not make this any harder than it has to be
Trying to fit until you keep pretending
You’re hands and heart find out eventually
Till I come off your head cause baby you’re no king
You got no queen

What a waste, what a waste of time
Wish I could hit rewind
A part of me knows that you don’t care
And I’m done wasting my time
Not losing sleep tonight
Wide awake during this nightmare

I had so much faith in you
To show me something different
Now everything falls apart

What a waste, what a waste of time
Wish I could hit rewind
Wide awake during this nightmare
And I’m done wasting my time
Not losing sleep tonight
Wide awake during this nightmare
