Candi Carpenter - Nervous System

Nervous System

Jump to...

This third instalment in Candi Carpenter’s Demonology Part I series, ‘Nervous System’ is a pop-sensibilities song with ace lyrics. It also has another quirky horror video that you’re going to want to watch.

The synth kicks in with muted EQ, before settling into a synth-bass pump that lets the verse cut through. The chorus is just a touch thicker, with sparky backing vocals and a little motif for extra lift. While the verse features laid-bare storytelling, the chorus is a well-landed metaphor.

The middle eight mixes Billy Joel with Tom Lehrer, providing a musical list with a twist, though the tongue-in-cheek psychology and neurology references are found throughout the song.

The video is mad science, mad medicine, and brain-eating. What’s not to love?

Demonology Part I

So far, we’ve had three songs in the Demonolgy series (from the twisted mind of Candi Carpenter) and they are all crackers. The songs are perfect and the cover art is a homage to classic genre fiction.

  1. Exorcist
  2. Novels About Vampires
  3. Nervous System

There are three more to complete the EP, ‘Serial Killer’, ‘Skinny’, and ‘Cult’. The songs weave pop horror themes into intimate songs about navigating modern life.

Nervous System Lyrics

I lie to my doctor
About how much I drink and smoke
Sitting in an office
Surrounded by inspirational quotes
He asks about my income
And level of education
In the middle ages they used to do
This thing called trepanation

A procedure where the surgeon
Drills a hole into your skull
To let the evil spirits out
And let the pressure out
The precursor to lobotomy
Before neurobiology
My eyes dart around anxiously

I have a nervous system
I’m nervous all the time
I’m a lot like Hannibal
I’m just a cannibal
Eating myself alive
I have a nervous system
A nervous system

They say that life’s a party
But I’ve always hated parties
I imagine a car wreck
Every time I touch my car keys
I don’t want to go anywhere
I’m a temperamental houseplant
Dehydrated full of hatred
Cat hair on my sweat pants

When I check the CAPTCH box
It says I’m not a robot
I’m lying to myself
And I’m lying to my laptop
I don’t wanna hand this down
I’m afraid to reproduce
I wonder if Sigmund Freud
Turned into his dad too

I have a nervous system
I’m nervous all the time
I’m a lot like Hannibal
I’m just a cannibal
Eating myself alive
I have a nervous system
A nervous system

I’m just a parietal, occipital, temporal, and frontal lobe
Cerebellum, lizard brainstem, pons and diencephalon
All these cervical thoracic lumbal sacral spinal nerves
Peripheral, somatic, autonomic… these are fancy words

For my nervous system
I’m sorry it’s not more organised
It’s business as usual
I’m biting my cuticles
Literally eating myself alive

I have a nervous system
I’m nervous all the time
I’m a lot like Hannibal
I’m just a cannibal
Eating myself alive
I have a nervous system
A nervous system
